233 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Just as the art showcased in Phantom Sightings deals with shifting and multiple identities, anonymous interventions into daily life, and hybridized objects and life forms, so does the exhibition itself stem from the interventions of many specialized talents. Thus, while the exhibition is credited to the efforts of its three curators, it in fact has drawn from many sources for its final form. Our first thanks go to the Peter Norton Family Foundation, which supported lacma in making this project possible. We are extremely grateful for the foundation's generosity and their notably venturesome support of cultural programs in the United States. The initial impetus for this show occurred during the tenure of Andrea L. Rich, former lacma president and director, and Bruce Robertson, former deputy director of art programs and chief curator of American art, whose early support led to a strategic partnership with the Chicano Studies Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. We thank them and Michael Govan, present chief executive officer and Wallis Annenberg director, for extending that innovative vision. Many individuals and entities participated in the realization of this project. Of course, we thank the numerous lenders who parted with their works to be shown here and in the exhibition's international tour. We also thank our colleagues at the Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and El Museo del Barrio and the Americas Society in New York for joining us in bringing the show to a geographically and culturally diverse public. Numerous galleries based in Los Angeles facilitated loans and served as resources for information. Among them are Acuna-Hansen Gallery, Patricia Correia Gallery, Anna Helwing Gallery, Kontainer Gallery, Gallery Luisotti, Walter Maciel Gallery, Tropico de Nopal, and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. New York-based galleries include Caren Golden Fine Art, I-20 Gallery, Sara Meltzer Gallery, and Daniel Reich Gallery. Other galleries include John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, GalerĂa OMR, Mexico City, and Okay Mountain, Austin, Texas. We thank them all for their kind assistance. No exhibition evolves in a professional vacuum, and Phantom Sightings is no exception. We benefited immeasurably from brainstorming, information sharing, and good advice proffered by colleagues who supported our efforts. We extend our special thanks to Aimee Chang, Rachel Cook, Deborah Cullen, Henry Estrada, Lauri Firstenberg, Elvis Fuentes, Miki Garcia, Natasha Garcia-Lomas, Kate Green, Colin Gunckel, Josh Kun, Harper Montgomery, Adrian Rivas, Reyes Rodriguez, Tere Romo, Roberto Tejada, Pilar Tompkins, Gilbert Vicario, and Victor Zamudio-Taylor.
