Los Jaichackers is a collaborative effort of San Francisco-based Julio Cesar Morales and Los Angeles-based Eamon Ore-Giron. Although individually each artist works in more traditional media, such as drawing, painting, and sculpture, Los Jaichackers allows them a forum for their shared interest in sound and DJ culture. Indeed, each has explored the territory of audio culture in their respective work, with Morales having done a series of audio excavation projects that archive and remix the work of Cuban Mexican composer and bandleader Perez Prado, and Ore-Giron using the actual materials of the audiophile —vinyl and record covers—as components in his sculptures and drawings. Their moniker comes from the phonetic pronunciation of the English "hijackers" as said by a Spanish speaker. In this project, Migrant Dubs, they are interested in commandeering or diverting musical expression into new forms. The artists will travel to all four venues slated for the Phantom Sightings tour. In each city, they will scout a performer or band that represents a dynamic fusion of cultural expression and musical form, such as "reggaeton-meets-light pop" or "Mexican black metal." They will then record and produce a track for the chosen performers, which will be featured in a specially designed "listening station" for the exhibition visitors—who, in turn, will be able to remix the sounds and create new mixes. The artists are interested in the uses of digital technology by migrant cultures and the possibility for syncretic fusions and, in their words, "cultural resistance." 212 COLLABORATIONS IN PHANTOM SIGHTINGS LOS JAICHACKERS Los Jaichackers, 2006, installation view at Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Artes-Roma, Mexico City
