235 Virtually every department at lacma played a role in producing this exhibition, and we thank them all. We are pleased to acknowledge the contributions of those individuals whose participation was instrumental in producing this show. Director of sponsorships Robert Levine and his colleagues Hathaway Jackobsen, Stephanie Dyas, and Amanda Lipsey brought their customary resourcefulness and dedication to the task of generating patronage for the exhibition and its related programming. Assistant director for exhibitions Irene Martin, together with former exhibition programs coordinator Janelle Aieta, her coworker and successor Sarah Minnaert, and curatorial administrator Elaine Peterson, adroitly shepherded this project through all stages. Alexandra Moran and Lynette Johnson of the registrar's office saw to all aspects of safely bringing the works to lacma and its tour venues and returning them to the lenders. The crew of lacma's department of gallery services, managed by William Stahl, constructed the exhibition space so handsomely designed by Daniel Forrest. lacma's team of ace art preparators, headed by Jeffrey Haskin, deftly installed this complex presentation. And Megan Mellbye coordinated the plenteous audiovisual quotient of this show. We deeply appreciate the always reliable support and safety net provided by curatorial administrators and our pals Drew Oberjuerge, Amber Wells, and Devi Noor. This project further benefited from the serious sleuthing and fact checking of Getty Foundation multicultural undergraduate interns Nathalie Sanchez and Adabel Ariana Rosas and volunteer Roz Leader. lacma supervising photographer Peter Brenner and Steven Oliver produced many of the new photographs for this catalogue, and Jessee Vidaurre and Diana Principe of the ucla Chicano Studies Research Center prepared numerous image files accompanying its texts. Piper Severance faithfully pursued images and the many permissions required to reproduce copyrighted photographs, corporate logos, and other visual material. lacma's codirector of publications Thomas Frick worked closely with Rubén Ortiz-Torres and Jim Mendiola to ensure that their wit and wisdom sparkled in "The Truthful History of the Conquest of Nuevo Aztlán," the "anti-chronology" they contributed to this volume. We salute all of them for bringing their specialized skills, professionalism, and team spirit to bear. We are particularly grateful to lacma's vice president of education Jane Burrell, director of education Toby Tannenbaum, and assistant museum educator Cristina Cuevas-Wolf, who collaborated with us and produced the constellation of stimulating public programs surrounding Phantom Sightings. And former senior vice president Christine Hansen, with associate vice president Barbara Pflaumer, Allison Agsten, and Christine Choi, mobilized lacma's public information services to tell the world about it all. Catalogues are the lasting record of the exhibitions they document and interpret and are of equal importance. Sara Cody's knuckle-down editorial prowess, hawkeyed proofreading skills, and rollicking good cheer enabled her to support the voices of the authors as well as the interests of their readers, doubtless coaxing said writers and readers into a closer communion. Paul Wehby's dynamic yet solid design of this book brilliantly meets the challenge of capturing the spirit of the art it presents. It was a joy to work with our insightful guest contributors—C. Ondine Chavoya, Bill Kelley Jr., Mario Ontiveros, Dianna Marisol Santillano, and Michele Urton—who have added so much to this book. And we are grateful to University of California Press, our copublisher and distributor, for bringing this volume to the extensive audience that we know exists. Finally, we thank the artists, without whom (it hardly need be said) there would be no show; more to the point, we thank them for their achievements that inspired all of us affiliated with this show to bring it to fruition. Their work is what our work was all about. HOWARD N. FOX RITA GONZALEZ CHON A. NORIEGA
