humorous imagery. Some of the treatments were as simple as an attendant pouring a bucket of cold water from a ladder, and some as bizarre and a swaddling rebirthing treatment. The entire episode was shot at the Hempstead House in Long Island and I thought that the austerity of the stone walls and leaded windows populated by the simple tin and wooden tubs and tables resulted in a strong nified l. One of the pleasures of working on Dickinson is designing the moments of fantasy when the show goes into the poetic mind of Emily Dickinson. In episode 204 Emily encounters the famous landscape architect Frederick Olmsted and on a walk with him enters a hedge that turns into an endless surreal maze. There is no hedge maze of this size in North America to shoot in, so the challenge was substantial, and since the scene connects to the Amherst town square exterior, which was already established, this could not be an onstage visual eets ret. e sltin as to plant enough bushes to create a practical set on the location to shoot the scenes, and extend them it isal eets lminating on a drone shot that sees the maze etending magiall t fill te entire frame. Rather than a traditional sculpted privet hedge maze, a wilder arrangement of evergreens was used that felt more in line with the Olmsted philosophy. It became something less constrained and more organic. It did require that the greens department, led by Ginny Walsh, plant over one hundred trees, and even that only created a tiny erentage te mae seen in te final drne st tat te isal eets deartment s seamlessl created. In a small and probably barely noticed detail on the vestibule of Evergreens, the wallpaper is a golden maze. It is a strange metallic paper that is very changeable with lighting. At certain angles, the maze is prominent and at others it recedes. It is a tin detail tat reets a larger isal teme and although perhaps only noticed by me, contains the ethos of the design.
