Newbury to come on as a consultant. Kevin is an opera director and I had designed sets for him at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. He was able to instruct us on the correct composition and size of the orchestra, so that the positions of the musicians were correct. He also made sure that the staging of the scene from La Traviata was properly decorated and propped. Having real musicians and opera singers involved as background helped land the set properly. I also had lobby scenes and since I had used the actual lobby for the theater, I decided to use the mezzanine above the orchestra as the lobby, which a rded a nderl ie te grand andelier and lts sae t dr in te agrnd t convey the sense of a luxurious opera house. The powder room on the mezzanine and the connecting hallways were converted into a backstage and dressing rooms. The long corridor shot of Emily backstage was inspired by an article I found in The New York Times about the Paris Garnier Opera House, which was in fact built in the 1850s. My favorite being the ceiling of ballet tutus that Emily passes under in the maze of the backstage. In the tech scout, it was decided to extend the shot into the mezzanine space also used as the lobby, so I sddenl ad fi t eet ndressed set t nnet the corridor to the dressing room where Emily meets the soprano Adelaide who had mesmerized her with her performance of Violetta.
