M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 27 EM: So that recurring sound theme, that's something you guys brought to him as an idea in your process? NF: Yeah, because you'd go into a shot of a flashback and he'd remember shooting his dad or shooting the other boy or whatnot, and I'd say, "Hey, how about we try that stomping?" It kind of built from there. It became a theme that we used throughout the season, like "Hey, we're going into another flashback, let's try the stomping." Noah's really into repetition. He loves being able to lead the audience with something. In Legion, we did that a lot where you create something and then bring the audience back to it. So audio becomes like a motif, on top of everything else it does. It's a signature for Noah to do those types of things. So, you look for those moments where you can bring that. EM: That's amazing. Also in that first episode, there's a scene with Donatello Fadda in the back of a car and it seems like he has a massive heart attack. But then he, well, surprises the audience by passing gas in a pretty giant way. And then in a later episode, Swanee Capps gets food poisoning from eating a pie and it ends in some similar results. So dare I ask, just how did you go about creating these sounds and was there any dierence based on the size of the character in terms of how you approach that? NF: I'm going to let Matt take that one. MT: Yeah, sound libraries are full of fart sounds, so there were a plethora of choices. We certainly considered the weight and size of the individual to make the appropriate sound. We followed the AAFs and the intent of the director, so we kind of mimicked what they had provided. NF: Which is ironic though, because before we really started, when they just started editorial, we got a sound effects pool list of things and one of the pools was "we need a long fart that is at least 30 seconds long." I don't know what that is, but that's a chore. (laughing) Maybe, you know, 10 seconds long and you're like "Well, that's pretty good, but how do I make that 30 seconds long?" Luckily, it turned out it wasn't going to be that long in the actual cut, but it was a little bit of a challenge to get something that full for that long. But I think Donatello's was about getting it much more airy, boomy, loud, and boisterous. The food poisoning one was much more intestinal and much more of that sick feeling, and we were focused on that. So we tried to bury it so it definitely had some kind of distinction to it. I don't know if I sent this to you Matt, but there was an article, I think it was in Vanity Fair or Rhythmic stomping became a recurring theme in Fargo Season 4.
