92 I M PS E . O R G with judging the feature categories. Previously, we've held screenings to shortlist from around 20 entries to seven. Then those seven fi lms have screened to a panel in a single, high-quality room at Deluxe Australia (another of our sponsors). In previous years, that fi nal panel would include judges who travelled from interstate for these screenings. With that kind of travel virtually impossible this year, we had to organise a number of screening venues around the country. This meant that we were able to keep this as a truly national process. There are many awards, but one is titled the Andrew Plain Award for Best Film Sound Editing. Who is Andrew, and what is the Andrew Plain Memorial Fund? Andrew was a highly regarded supervising sound editor with credits spanning 30 years, and who worked on many signifi cant Australian fi lms, as well as a number of international productions. He was also a great mentor, with many people crediting him for giving them a start in the industry. Sadly, Andrew left us, far too young, in 2013. The award is named for him in recognition of his contribution to both the craft of sound and the development of young people. As well, his family and the ASSG have established the Andrew Plain Memorial Fund with a view to helping younger people to further their education in screen sound. The King won Soundtrack of the Year. It was supervised by Rob Mackenzie who won an Academy Award for Hacksaw Ridge with Kevin O'Connell, Peter Grace, and Andy Wright. The year before that, David White was honoured alongside Mark Mangini for Mad Max: Fury Road, and Ben Osmo won Best Sound Mixing with Chris Jenkins and Gregg Rudlo‹ . Both Hacksaw Ridge and Mad Max: Fury Road won MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Can you comment? Well, you could say, as a small guild and a small industry, we punch above our weight. Of that, we are extremely proud. But the truth is that this is about these individual practitioners—winning any award at that level is a result of the years of hard work that go in before that one fi lm. People like Ben Osmo and David White have decades of experience, and are highly committed to their craft. As is often said, it can take many years to become an overnight success. What do you think are the advantages of bringing a sound project to Australia? Mostly, it's about the people who are highly dedicated to their craft. The international award success shows that we have people here who can work at the highest level. But passion and dedication to storytelling are just as important, and that is what people here have, alongside their technical knowledge and expertise. What positives did you take from the awards show and 2020? The King. Image permission by Netfl ix. Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, and Joel Edgerton star in The King, directed by David Michôd.
