62 The Costume Designer Winter 2021 BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK The Flight Attendant, a new dark comedic thriller based on The New York Times bestselling novel by Chris Bohjalian, boasts costumes by CD Cat Thomas. In association with HBO Max, star Kaley Cuoco's kickoff project for her new company Yes, Norman Productions, re- counts how an entire life can turn in the flicker of one wild night. A frenetic flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, next to her dead one-night stand, with no clue what happened. Like so many shows, production shut down in March 2020, then picked up in August to shoot the final two episodes. To save Cuoco's character from being in the same costume for several episodes, it was decided that Cassie should buy new clothes off the street to heighten her disguise. Thomas recounts, "The love for New York was so strong for us, an 'I NY' sweatshirt became the perfect purchase." But to get it on camera, there's clearance … and it was the day be- fore shooting. Thomas turned to cast member Rosie Perez, who has known New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for years and appeared with him during the height of the 2020 lockdown, bringing human- ity to New York's public COVID response."We know you know Cuomo," Thomas said, presenting Perez with a mission. "I'm on it!" she responded. Lo and behold, Governor Cuomo himself called the Empire State Development Corporation's clearance office the next morning, and Cuoco nailed her first take in the hoodie by 10 a.m. "We all cried together when Kaley put that sweatshirt on," Thomas says, "because I NY is such a symbol of renewal and strength—it made us all really happy and proud. The sense you can pull yourself through anything drives The Flight Attendant and Cassie's charac- ter. It's a very special show, for both what we put on the screen, and how we came together in chaos." Compiled and written by: Stacy Ellen Rich, lastace@mac.com Kaley Cuoco and Rosie Perez on location in Hong Kong After seven months of shutdown, CD Tracey White re- turned to the new Netf lix sitcom The Upshaws in Sep- tember 2020. The series, starring Mike Epps, Kim Fields, and Wanda Sykes, centers around a working-class family in Indiana, struggling to make it work and make it right with- out any blueprints for life. Many scenes take place in an auto mechanic shop, re- quiring the uniforms be distressed to look authentic and not ap- pear "cartoony." White also collaborated with the art department to create the logo for uniform patches. As a contemporary piece, White was very happy that she was able to actually design and create cos- tumes for several characters. Starting with her illustrations on to fab- ric and trim selections, and lastly collaborat- ing with the tailor, cut- ter, and fitter to bring the costumes to life. She also aimed to conquer the new pandemic chal- lenges by making sev- eral new adjustments … testing daily, distribution and gathering of cast costumes, and of course, PPE guidelines are the modes of the day. The Upshaws is slated to air spring of 2021. Tracey White
