70 The Costume Designer Winter 2021 On March 2, 2020, the film The Banker premiered pre-shutdown at the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. CD Aieisha Li and ACD Jennifer Leigh Scott were on hand for the momentous occasion. Set in the 1960s and inspired by true events, The Banker centers on revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), who devise an auda- cious and risky plan to take on the racist establishment by helping other African Americans pursue the American dream. Along with Garrett's wife Eunice (Nia Long), they train a working-class white man to pose as the rich and privileged face of their burgeoning real estate and banking empire, while Garrett and Morris pose as a jani- tor and a chauffeur. Their success ultimately draws the attention of the federal government which threatens everything the four have built. The Newport Beach Film Festival was held virtually this year, prompting CD Stacy Ellen Rich to hold court in her living room in her first Zoom Q&A for the potent short film Jane. Directed by Natalija Vekic and inspired by true events, Jane is set against the backdrop of the burgeoning women's rights movement in the '60s. In 1969, chilling to realize, there is no Roe v. Wade. Teresa (Mishel Prada) and Josie (Mekenna Melvin) are part of an underground group who help women access safe abortions. When the doctor does not show up, will they turn women in need away? "Designing the period costumes for such an important project was an act of joy and activism," says Rich. In an exhibition titled Designs for Different Futures, CD Ane Crabtree's original designs for The Handmaid's Tale are on view virtually at the Minneapolis Walker Art Center's website until April 11, 2021. Crabtree also col- laborated on an animated short film and exhibition for the Na- tional Gallery of Victoria in Mel- bourne, Australia, for the NGV Triennial. Crabtree and her cad- re's section of the exhibition is called Planet City, directed and produced by LA-based Aussie film- maker Liam Young, which implements technologies such as photo- grammetry to encourage viewers to speculate on what the future holds.
