68 The Costume Designer Winter 2021 CD Mikael Sharafyan, along with ACD Erica Howard, wrapped the 1999 period film Proof Sheet, shot and set in Los Angeles. Star- ring Maria Conchita Alonso, the plot revolves around an incriminat- ing roll of film which plunges an unsuspecting photo lab worker into a dark world of sex, secrets, and murder. Sharafyan created a romanticized style to give a fresh touch to the look of the late '90s, which was in itself a transformative period in fashion. In order to keep the mood light and bright, the costume department would play music to maintain high energy throughout the day. Sharafyan would take his 1-year-old daughter Stephanie, with him to the costume houses so he could spend more time with her. Netflix variety special Sarah Cooper: Everything's Fine, designed by CD Trayce Gigi Field, covers many issues of politics, race, gen- der, and class. Guest stars include Maya Rudolph, Helen Mirren, Jon- athan Van Ness, Aubrey Plaza, Marisa Tomei, Jon Hamm, and many more. The costumes were all fast and furious. Working on a sketch show meant being creative was an everyday occurrence. From Trump impressions to devils, Field covered the gamut of costumes. "In this unusual political time, this special brings comedy to the absurdity of our country's politics and conspiracy theo- ries," she exclaims. "It was such a fun project to costume design." A special shoutout goes to CDG member Bryan Kopp, who was the il- lustrator for Jonathan Van Ness' custom build. BFN - PRESS A charming article about the film Happiest Season, with costumes designed by CD Kathleen Felix-Hager is featured on fashionista .com. Cue the time-honored, comforting seasonal movie elements— relatable sibling rivalry, comedic mix-ups, uninvited exes, perhaps a toppled Christmas tree, and a joyful resolution by Christmas Day. But this time, the heartfelt story is centered around LBGTQ+ leads in a holiday movie landscape full of heteronormative fare. Felix-Hager explains, "For all the characters, I erred on the side of classic colors, or a silhouette, or a look that hopefully stands the test of time. Holi- day movies live forever, so to not date the costumes to any particular time was important." IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK Since publishing her memoir Stars in Their Underwear: My Unpre- dictable Journey from Broadway Dancer to Costume Designer for Some of Hollywood's Biggest Stars, CD Diana Eden has been gloriously featured in a number of online magazines, including Piv- otdancer, Journeywoman, and IWWG. Eden reminisces, "I wanted to write this book to tell my story—from my childhood in England during World War II to participating in numerous history-making events." The memoir contains over 80 images, many of them previ- ously unreleased behind-the-scenes photos taken by Eden herself! Mikael Sharafyan and Stephanie.
