IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK Amid ever-heightening COVID cases, CD Alexandra Welker re- turned to Vancouver, BC, in August to complete the remaining nine episodes of Season 1 of The Mighty Ducks: Gamechangers. Air- ing on Disney+, the new series updates the classic kids' hockey franchise of the 1990s, and introduces a new gang of scrappy, lov- able misfits who learn life lessons in friendship while becoming a hockey team. As a longtime fan of The Breakfast Club, Welker was delighted to work with returning Coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez). Shooting a team sports project, with an ensemble cast of minors, multiple hockey games, and large crowds in every episode was challenging, especially during a pandemic. Welker was amply supported by her talented IATSE Local 891 team, and a sweet and eager cast of up-and-comers. CD Kim Ngo wrapped the feature film Orphan: First Kill shot on location in chilly Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As a prequel to Orphan, the costume design was a compelling challenge, creating looks for the lead character to appear 12 years younger, and at times, costuming seven body doubles of various sizes and ages. Shooting came with its own set of chilling hurdles, including exterior scenes shot in -9ºF for days at a time, in icy and snowy "Winterpeg" condi- tions. Even though the COVID cases in Manitoba were low com- pared to Los Angeles and most US cities, safety restrictions were very rigorous. Toward the middle of production, the city went into lockdown and all non-essential in-store purchases were banned. Luckily, the costume department had already purchased most of the costumes but did have to make robes out of flannel blankets. Ngo reflects, "Gratefully, the production had zero cases of COVID on set, captured a killer film, and had a blast doing it."
