32 The Costume Designer Winter 2021 by Alexandra Welker Created by Chris Van Dusen and executive producer Shonda Rhimes, Netflix's new 8-part series Bridgerton is a delightful romp through Regency England. Providing a welcome distraction from stressful times and grey winter weather, it is packed with romance, intrigue, scandal, social climb- ing, and "eye candy" of all sorts. And the costumes! Oh, the costumes! Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick built her own costume house in order to create over 7,500 pieces that made up an estimated 5,000 costumes. Her crew of 238—including pattern cutters, embroiderers, embellishers, and tailors—produced exquisite gowns, coats, shawls, headpieces, and more, all honoring the Regency silhouette while updating to bold colors and fabrications. The result is daring and fresh, and absolutely irresistible. "Huge challenge, huge delight!" BRIDGERTON –Ellen Mirojnick Photo: Courtesy Netflix
