J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 1 | P E R S P E C T I V E 1 3 C O N T R I B U T O R S S T E V E J O Y N E R is a free range Production Designer currently splitting his time between Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. It's an exciting time to be working in the Art Department. The need for social distancing is driving us to find new ways for the Art Department to allow directors, cinematographers and other creatives to visualize design virtually. For built sets, we are looking into creating VR tours of digital models. Some of the tools we are exploring are the Theta Z1 360 Degree camera, Matterport and Oculus Quest headsets. Our frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez is currently working on Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and is able to preview digital and practical sets using a VR headset. He is able to set camera positions and give feedback to the designers and VFX departments as if he was on set. The increase in virtual collaboration is beginning to give the Art Department more access to geographically distributed Set Designers, storyboard artists and illustrators. An Art Director may have a favorite Set Designer who lives in New Orleans who is now more likely to be hired by production without the need to relocate. While there will always be a need for boots on the ground, the Art Department is freely able to tap talent all over the country. M A R K R I C K E R grew up in North Carolina and Colorado. He got his first taste of the movie business handing out hot dogs to extras in Bull Durham while studying English at UNC-Chapel Hill. Next up was interning for Jan Pascale on the original film version of The Handmaid's Tale in 1989. After propping and set dressing on Once Around, Passion Fish and The Last of the Mohicans, Ricker left the business to get his MFA in scenic design at NYU. He returned to the directors of those films, eventually designing for Lasse Hallstrom (The Hoax) and John Sayles (Sunshine State), as well as a return project with Daniel Day-Lewis (Rebecca Miller's The Ballad of Jack and Rose). He was also pleased to work with Jan again, designing and decorating Jay Roach's All the Way. Ricker has designed 29 films (including Bombshell, Snatched, Get on Up, The Judge, The Way Way Back and The Nanny Diaries). He's received three nominations by the Art Directors Guild—for Julie & Julia, The Help and Trumbo—and two Emmy nominations for Barry Levinson's You Don't Know Jack and Ben Stiller's acclaimed limited series Escape at Dannemora. Ricker has recently wrapped Halston, a limited series on the fashion designer for Netflix. He lives in New York City.
