The interiors needed to refl ect the fusion of multiple architectural styles represented in San Simeon, including Spanish colonial, Gothic and classicism among others. There were specifi cally two scenesLouis Mayer's birthday party and the fi nal Hearst dinner partythat required stage sets that felt like separate spaces within the same estate. Due to limited stage space and budget concerns, the idea was to design a hall which would aff ord the fi lming of both scenes with a suffi cient changeover period to allow for the altering of paneling, windows, doorways, fi replaces and their placement, as well as a distinguishable redressing of the space to convey a visually relatable but separate room. This was an aggressive design and build to accomplish. The sets were extremely detailed with layers of moulding and staff elements. Both sets incorporated tapestries, statuary, paintings and other antiquities that refl ected the indulgent decor of Hearst and constituted an enormous dress. The manufacture of the dining table and chairs, as well as side tables to refl ect the actual existing furnishings for the dining hall was instrumental to conveying authenticity. The ceilings were added by visual eff ects. Stewardship is not a characteristic spoken of much in design or fi lmmaking but through this experience, I took away a new understanding of its importance to the visual, as well as the practical. Working on a project of this quality that involves the history of fi lmmaking in Los Angeles is a cherished experience. I love fi lms where people smoke. I am grateful to the Art Department crew listed here for their contributions. A special recognition needs to be given to Trish Gallaher Glenn and the prop department for their attention to detail that contributed immensely to the look of the fi lm. I am also grateful to Jeff Goyer, Kimberly Pope, Karu De Jesus and Robert Benavides for their dedication.
