HALE + THE DELOS CORPORATE CAMPUS The City of Arts and Sciences in alencia, Spain, encapsulated the Delos Corporate ethosa perfect backdrop for Charlotte Hale's storyline, now acting head of the Delos Corporation. The elegant, but powerful sweeping forms of Calatrava's masterpiece lent such scale to the look of the show and just the right emotion. Of course, it also meant that I could reference the architecture for all the stage interiors built in LA. Set Designer Dan Jennings' main focus was to model and draw these interiors, including a boardroom, Hale's offi ce, extensive hallways and a control room. Dan executed these all with architectural integrity. The engineering and complexity of those architectural forms combined with an exceptional number of very large glass windows could not have been done without construction coordinator Joe Ondrejko and his crew, who have been with the show since the fi rst season. The tight delivery time frames meant that I had to really work hand-in-hand with Joe to see how this could be accomplished. THE MAN IN BLACK + THE MENTAL INSTITUTE A good example of creative and effi cient set construction brings me to the character of William or "The Man in Black," as he is driven to the brink of madness and committed to a mental institution. After an plan to shoot at the Salk Institute fell through, Jon Carlos felt we could fi gure out a way to build it all on stage and rework sets after they were shot into other parts of the hospital. It all hinged on the construction department to deliver the sets and turn them around in very little time, which they managed to do well with guidance from Art Director James Bolenbaugh. This kept the production on stage for a while, which was a great relief as it came directly after being abroad. E F G H HBO HBO
