M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 53 On day two of the event, MPSE Board member David Barber CAS MPSE continued the discussion of keeping the play head rolling during the shutdown by moderating the CAS panel discussion. Panelists Will Files CAS, Marc Fishman CAS, David E. Fluhr CAS, Gabriel Guy CAS, and Karol Urban CAS MPSE all provided their insights on the new sonic hurdles, both technical and creative, facing mixers on the dub stage. Gabriel Guy revealed that during the shutdown, Disney Animation actually ramped up production to supply the freshman streaming service Disney+ even more material for everyone at home. "It's been Zoom, it's been Evercast, it's been Clearview, it's been Pix… It's been full speed ahead to keep the pipeline moving." For those who were able to return to the stage, keeping up on protocols was key. Since April, Fluhr has been all over Los Angeles and up at Skywalker in an attempt to wrap productions that were currently in progress or already booked. Fluhr underscored that it's important to be fully aware of the fact that "each studio seems to have their own kind of version of what the rules are … if you are going to the stage there are 'COVID people' and everybody has different rules and you want to respect [them]," because the results of not obeying the rules can be catastrophic to productions. Fluhr warned, "If somebody walks in and says, 'you have too many people in here,' they have the right to shut it down and then everybody's out of work." The panel of re-recording mixers discussed the details of dealing with ADR recordings from on-hand devices, like iPhones, or in terrible sounding rooms. Guy lamented about the home recordings he had to supervise, shipping out microphones to the talent of his various Disney+ projects, highlighting the range of technical knowledge that a variety of actors may or may not have. "Which end [of the microphone] to talk into is actually a huge thing," chuckled Guy. "Also, how to hit the record button. You'd be amazed at how many times that doesn't happen." Guy recommended connecting via screen share with the talent to actually watch them hit record before performing their take. When asked for their best solutions for rescuing a poorly recorded line, the panel discussed a variety of plugins that they all reach for, including Todd AO's Absentia DX for its outstanding hum removal, as well as iZotope's new RX8, Cedar DNS One, Waves WNS, or Zynaptiq Unveil each for their ability to reduce background noise and reverb tails. For EQ matching, RX8 and FabFilter's Q3 provide the panel great results. Fluhr also recommended a tried and true offering from DUY, Magic Spectrum, which is a plugin specifically designed to match the spectrum of one piece of audio to another, making it ideal for ADR.
