M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 45 Craig Henighan and Will Files, co-supervising sound editors, and 2020 Primetime Emmy winners in Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) for Stranger Things Chapter Eight: "The Battle of Starcourt." WILL: Even the idea of a sound designer and they go, "What does that mean?" I stole my answer from Randy Thom, "I make the sounds for things that don't exist"; the things that you can't just go record. Someone has to think about what that sounds like and figure it out, figure out how to make it. Supervising sound editor is even harder to wrap your head around. PAULETTE: So is this your first time co-sound supervising together? WILL: Craig and I tend to partner with a lot of co-supervisors because of the fact that we mix and sound design. Especially when you get to the mix, you kind of need someone to back you up who's not mixing. It works well for us, especially because I tend to co-supervise with someone who is more of a dialogue-focused supervisor. CRAIG: Traditionally, a supervising sound editor was the person who did the managing, did the meetings and did all that stuff, while the editors were busy in rooms cutting. We try to make it more of an informal thing and much more of a collective. When someone wants to talk to the dialogue editor, we tell them, "These are the people who are working on your show, so you should talk to the dialogue editor directly." When we are mixing, the editorial goes off and the mixing hat goes on, so having a co-supervisor with you is paramount. PAULETTE: Well, I have a lot of admiration and sympathy for you at the same time. WILL: I had a lot of sympathy for us too when I went back and watched what we won for. Oh my god! This was so much work. PAULETTE: When do you actually get the physical Emmy? CRAIG: That's a really good question! Maybe there's some poor guy driving around in a van today?
