18 I M PS E . O R G SYN C SOU N D Read the Screen THE SECRETS OF FOLEY CUEING PART 3 CUEING PROPS BY SOLANGE S. SCHWALBE MPSE This Pro Tools Session shows what Ghost Files look like when cueing Foley. None of these regions created for cueing have audio in it. T he definition of FOLEY is Sound FX recorded live in sync with picture following a CUEING program. CUES define the action that will be performed. Cues are divided by two categories. One is FOOTSTEPS, the other is PROPS. FOOTSTEPS are defined by any human being upright in motion. Walking, running, skipping, hopping, jumping, are examples of some Footsteps. If a person starts to crawl or climb a ladder, it is no longer a Footstep. It is now a Prop. PROPS represent everything that is NOT a Footstep. CUEING Foley is crucial to the Foley stage. The Foley mixer needs to be able to record Foley in a fluid manner. All of the cueing must be as linear as possible. The process of CUEING is done in Pro Tools. The first step is to import Picture and Guide Track, make sure timecode is printed on the picture image, line up the 2 Pop, and make sure the session is at the correct frame rate. Then add 16 mono tracks. All Foley is recorded in mono. Any stereo cue is recorded in mono twice, hence multiple mono. There is no true stereo recorded in Foley. For PROPS, cues are based on the ELEMENT (What is it?) and the ACTION (What's it doing?). Or, the ACTION and the ELEMENT. Try to keep the same Props on the same tracks. That way, the Foley artists only have to set up to record that cue throughout the reel only once. For example, if the lead character has a specific gun, put all of that gun mvt (movement) on one track throughout the reel. All cueing is in CAPS. Why? Because it's hard to read the screen in a control room or a dub stage. An example of labeling is… GRAB MARKER OFF DESK PULL CAP OFF MARKER WRITE ON BOARD SNAP CAP BACK ON MARKER SET MARKER DOWN ON DESK SIT DOWN CHAIR MVT PULL GUN OUT OF HOLSTER & MVT GRAB STEERING WHEEL GRAB JACKET, PUT ON MVT If there is more than one character on the screen, add their name to the end of the cue. PICK UP GLASS, DRINK WITH ICE GEORGE GRAB CAR DOOR GEORGE TAKE OFF JACKET, MVT DROP DOWN ONTO CHAIR GEORGE To create files for each cue, we will use what is referred to as "Ghost Files." These are files that do not contain any audio. These files come
