the narrative seems insignificant
when examined through the lens of
eternity.
As practitioners of the sonic
arts, you owe it to yourselves
to strive to contribute to the
craft. Exercise your storytelling
abilities in ways that transcend
the mechanical, exalting instead,
the purest nature of the narrative.
Read books. Explore how stories
are told. Push your comfort zone.
Probe the nature of narrative
conflict. Learn script analysis.
Examine your own work. Identify
stylistic ruts you find yourself in.
We all have comfortable, well-
worn sound effects that we find
ourselves cutting in time and time
again. Don't just cut the Universal
Phone Ring, or the Bengal Lancer
Ricochet. Take it upon yourself to
go out and record new replacement
material for any sounds that you've
heard enough to recognize. You
will never be disappointed when
you reach for the old standbys to
discover you have another option
that is unique to you. Always
remember—there are many ways to
cook a potato. May your batteries never
die.
