4 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2020 "Patience is not passive, on the contrary, it is concentrated strength."—Bruce Lee Our lives have changed dramatically during this pandemic. Some have endured painful losses; others have battled through illness, among other trials and tribulations. No matter what each person's story is, we have all had to learn the art of patience and understanding. With some productions slowly testing the waters and planning to resume, we hope we will be back to work to the jobs we all miss. Before that happens and we all return to our busy lives, I want to take time to reflect on the small sliver of a silver lining and the actual positive results that have come from all of this downtime. Over the last several months, we have been able to connect in ways and with people we had lost touch with. The use of Zoom and other platforms, including social media, such as Instagram, has allowed us to continue to do some of our union business, get to know new members, and help our fellow brothers and sisters who are in need. It is also to be commended how members are working to support each other in the goal of achieving more diversity and inclusion. Additionally, many of us have had the opportunity to learn and educate ourselves further in our crafts. Although the classes and discussions offered are all online, it still has given us the opportunity to pick up a new skill or learn about our fellow artists. All of which we probably would not have had the time to engage in if we were still working the long hours we used to. We have been given the task to face difficult issues head on and try to work together to find solutions. Through the Welfare Committee, the outreach program and some of our other committees, we have had the opportunity to bond and come to each other's assistance when needed. This is not about glossing over the hard times or difficult circumstances we face but about members of this Local rising up when faced with the challenges these times have presented. We all want answers as to when we will be getting back to work or even when we will be getting back to some kind of normalcy in our lives. We must recognize that the patience and resilience we have already exhibited once again shows the world what an amazing group of people we have in our Local. Please know that as any new information or resolutions come forth, they will be shared with you. We need to continue to be positive and optimistic about the future. Things will change for the better and in the not-so-distant future, we will find ourselves returning to our work. Let us join together in all our goals of looking forward to better times and working toward unity.
