4 I M PS E . O R G I'd like to welcome you all to the first issue of the MPSE Wavelength quarterly magazine. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as editor of the fi rst o cial magazine publication dedicated to our members of the Motion Picture Sound Editors, including our friends and associates throughout the sound communities near and far. Before I transitioned into the sound industry, I had a full career as a journeyman printer and then as a graphic designer, of which I thought I had retired those hats. There is a logical path connecting my journey from print and graphic design to sound design and editing, but that is a story for another day. I admit it was a bit serendipitous and fl attering for me when MPSE President Mark Lanza inquired if I would be interested in the role of editor for the new quarterly magazine. I graciously accepted, and as I grabbed my retired hats and batted o€ the dust, I wondered how much I remembered from back in the day? The more important question, how much of it is still applied in today's technology? The answer? All of it still applies, much to my relief. I am very proud to be a part of the dynamic and talented team of post production sound professionals that are the driving force behind the creation of MPSE Wavelength. I must thank the entire committee and all of the contributors who overwhelmingly handed over some pretty inspiring material for our fi rst issue, and they did it inside of three weeks and by a deadline! If there is one thing post production sound professionals understand, it is the meaning of hard work and the word "deadline." This fi rst issue is chock-full of entertaining, interesting, and informative content, including a regular column for EIPMA (Entertainment Industry Professionals Mentoring Alliance); a Q&A with Emmy & Golden Reel winner Rickley Dumm; Foley cueing; shooting ADR and loop group under the restraints of the COVID-19 quarantine; the challenges of fi nding e ciency in storytelling with sounds for Quibi; insights of music editing with Steven Saltzman; the new narrative Star Wars VR experience of Vader Immortal, and much more. Our goal with each issue is to bring you rich and resourceful material along with regular columns, helpful tips, and entertaining content. Please reach out to us if you are interested in contributing material or have a suggestion for a future article or column. One last thing I want to mention is that there will also be an online version of the magazine forthcoming on mpse.org's new website, which presently at this writing, is undergoing a transformation and will also be featuring a merchandise store for MPSE members and the sound community at large. Please indulge yourself in our fi rst issue of MPSE Wavelength from cover to cover. Enjoy!
