process, we'd incorporate any revisions from Jon (or Jon and Dave Filoni) into the 2D animatic. sing After Effects, Dave Duncan and Charlie would prepare and animate the jpegs for Duncan to edit in Premiere. Adding scratch track voices and further sweetened with temp music and sound FX, Duncan's animatics would play much like the finished episode. Duncan recalled, "The animatics with temp performances were like a 'visual table reading' of the scripts… Jon could get an idea of how the dialogue sounded and how the pacing was going for each episode." From the very inception of the show, Jon entrusted Doug Chiang to begin the work of world building for the episodes. Doug continually hit it out of the park with characters, creatures and environments, including Mando's classic muscular ship, the Razor Crest. Besides deftly reimagining obscure Star Wars characters for their new roles in this series, Doug also brought Jon's brilliantly conceived Baby Yoda to life. A favorite of fans and crew alike, this character was also perfectly crafted and puppeteered by Legacy Effects. It's no wonder that Doug's magnificent ILM team's concept art is featured during the credits after each episode. Doug Chiang remembered, "Jon challenged us to bring authenticity to our creations. He asked us to stay true to the spirit of the 1977 aesthetic while updating it as necessary for the modern audience. From the classic WWII aesthetics of the Razor Crest spaceship to the funkiness of the IG- assassin droid or the gnaught first seen on Cloud City, Jon wanted to retain the charm of the original aesthetics that inspired us as kids." As Doug mentioned, a big part of the enjoyment of making this show was, as Star Wars fans, getting to invent a new version of it for other fans. Doug continued, "For The Mandalorian, Jon has perfected the Star Wars recipe for the next generation. I remember from our early art reviews that we were onto something special. His comments made me smile; he was saying all the things that made me excited as a Star Wars fan. I remember thinking that's a cool idea, that's something I would want to see in a Star Wars film. e encouraged us to be A A.
