for the life of the series, this initial design carries
a disproportionate amount of weight and import.
hen concept is the result and the result is the
concept, this moment is an important early
infl ection point toward the latter.
In the case of Hunters this fi rst and most
important set was eyer Off erman's secret room.
The list of beats the design had to satisfy was long
and detailed. The secret room internally referred
to as the at Cave was accessed by a secret door
into a passageway tripped by a cryptex on a
bookshelf at a location yet to be determined. Okay,
so that's more like fi ve design problems baked
into one piece of stage direction. Once inside the
secret room, the design problems multiplied. This
was the space where eyer's secret society of Nazi
hunters tracked and catalogued the hunted Nazis,
planned their operations, armed themselves,
disguised themselves, kept their advanced
surveillance euipment, chilled out, and could
hide from the authorities when the heat was on.
Initially written as a subterranean lair, this felt to
me too close to the at Cave idiomsomething
seen many times before. emmed in by another
