THE ARTISAN SPRING 2020 • 9 From left: Camille Della Santina Calvet and President Julie Socash; Michael Key with Socash. GUILD NEWS GUILD NEWS It is with immense gratitude, I would like to share with you what the Welfare Committee has accomplished. Having had the pleasure of working together with President Julie Socash, we created the "Buddy Calling System," checking on members to assess their needs during this time of the coronavirus pandemic. We began by calling our retirees. We will continue until each and every member is called. This task could not have been possible without our president, our members of the Welfare Committee and ALL of our Volunteer Angels who responded to our fl yer. The Welfare Committee is dedicated to our members to provide guidance in fi nding any helpful resources and support such as grocer- ies, pickup and deliveries, mental health counseling and relief funds/ loans. If you are in need or have questions, please email us at welfare706 @gmail.com MUAHS Guild Gold Cards The Welfare Committee Deborah Huss, who has been my right hand and instrumental with helping the retirees, making sure they have what they need and are okay in their everyday life. Rory Gaudio (RoRo), a relatively new member who joined us to assist our president with our Zoom meetings, and so much more. A Big Shout Out to All Our Volunteer Angels! In Solidarity, Carmé Tenuta, Journeyman Make-up Artist Executive Board member/Welfare Committee Chair Gold Medal Winner Retired journeyman make-up artist Michael F. Blake's sixth book, The Cowboy President: The American West and the Making of Theodore Roosevelt, was recently awarded the gold medal at the Will Rogers Medallion Awards in Fort Worth, Texas. His book was also voted "Best Political Biography for 2018" by True West magazine, and nominated for the Western Writers of America Spur Award. Michael has also been lecturing about Roosevelt at the Grand Canyon, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Desert Caballeros Museum, Booth Western Art Museum and the James Western Art Museum. His seventh book, Go West, Mr. President: Theodore Roosevelt's Great Loop Tour of 1903, will be released in June 2020. So much for retirement. Congratulations to Team Bombshell for its magnificent sweep of every major and minor award for the make-up and hair artistry that transported the audience to mesmerizing real- ism. Not only did the make-up and hair win the Oscar, they scooped up the BAFTA, three MUAHS Guild Awards, the Critics Choice Award, the Gold Derby, the Hollywood Critics Award, OFTA (Online Film and Television Assoc.) and count- less others. Kazu Hiro, Vivian Baker and Anne Morgan gra- ciously thanked their 706 team, especially Bill Corso, Richard Redlefsen, Christina Waltz, Adruitha Lee, Jaime Lee McIntosh, Kelly Golden, Jennifer Greenberg, Randi Mavestrand, Karen Blynder, Claire Doyle, Robert Freitas, Tara Lang, Bart Mixon, Margarita Pidgeon, Lexx Staats, Georgette Sweet, and Dana Vargas. Vincent Van Dyke and his team at VVDFX supervised the incredibly realistic pros- thetics production. The unparalleled naturalism of the prosthetic transformations of Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly, John Lithgow as Roger Ailes, and Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson com- bined the overlapping contemporary hair and make-up stylings that personified the Fox News staff and showed tremendous teamwork. Audiences studied and speculated about the work that was done on the characters, often second guessing themselves and assuming the transformations were done digitally.Screenings and Q&A panels during the awards season revealed the practical make-up and hair styling techniques, revealing the difficulties they faced and the remarkable results that won them the Oscar. This is the second Oscar for Kazu Hiro, and the first Oscar win for Vivian Baker and Anne Morgan.
