4 • THE ARTISAN SPRING 2020 "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."–Henry Ford We are make-up artists and hair stylists; we are a strong group and an amazingly creative group. I have no doubt we will pave the way to getting back out there soon doing what we love. These are difficult times for us all but the amount of goodwill and support I am seeing union members give each other is truly magical. Under the leadership of Chairwoman Carmé Tenuta, the positive impact the Welfare Committee is being recognized throughout our Local and beyond. A simple phone call reaching out to a fellow member can make such a difference in the lives of people on both ends of the call. The same can be said for the impact of our Social Media and Legislative Committees, under the guidance of April Chaney and Angela Moos, keeping us informed and helping us to reach out to our leaders to affect real change. Many of our brothers and sisters have offered to help in different capacities. Some have been doing research and taking classes to gain knowledge and help find solutions so we can all be prepared to get back to work. Some have offered to share their varied talents with our membership. They will be offering online classes to further our continuing education. Your elected leaders from International and our Local have gone above and beyond, spending countless amount of time, and energy to do everything they can to help each and every member during this pandemic. It seems like almost every discussion includes trying to figure out how we are going to be proactive and keep ourselves, and our work areas protected. The more knowledge we can gain collectively, the more powerful we become. As a result, I would like to share with you a few things I have learned that you may be able to apply, even at home. DISINFECTION VS STERILIZATION • To disinfect means to eliminate most harmful microorganisms (not including their spores) from surfaces or objects— inactivate viruses. • To sterilize means to kill all microbes—whether harmful or not—and their spores present on a surface or object. • Disinfection is used mostly to decontaminate surfaces and air. • Sterilization is used mostly for food, medicine and surgical instruments. SANITIZERS, ALCOHOL AND CLEANSERS • Hand sanitizers are a great second choice to soap and water, but it is suggested to use a hand sanitizer with an alcohol concentration of around 70 percent to kill coronaviruses. • When deciding what alcohol to use: 70 percent alcohol is better for killing viruses as 99 percent alcohol evaporates too quickly for that type of use. • The actual presence of water in isopropyl alcohol is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. This in turn increases surface contact time and enhances effectiveness. • 99 percent alcohol is ideal as a solvent or cleaning agent for industries that produce water-sensitive items such as electronic devices. • Another rule from an expert in microbial risk assessment is to leave whatever cleaning solution you are using on a surface for a bit of time (at least 30 seconds). After it's been applied, let it sit there long enough to kill viruses first before wiping it off. • Never use different cleaning agents at the same time. Some household chemicals, if mixed, can create dangerous and poisonous gases. • Hydrogen peroxide is typically sold in concentrations of about three percent and can be used as is or diluted to 0.5 percent concentration for effective use against coronaviruses on surfaces. It should be left on surfaces for one minute before wiping. • Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted. Leave solution on the surface for at least one minute. • Remember: Mixing bleach with any acid, including vinegar, is very dangerous. It can produce a toxic chlorine gas. If you are going to use bleach, use only bleach. I hope this information will prove to be helpful and in closing, I would like to pivot to another important subject for us to think about. The power of thought is the strongest weapon we possess as a group. If we can manage to harness all the creativity and positivity that we have seen during this time, we will come out on the other end stronger than ever. I feel very lucky to be a part of this union family. Thank you to each and every one of you that has given of their time and talent to support their fellow Brothers and Sisters.
