20 • THE ARTISAN SPRING 2020 Hair and make-up teams for A Series of Unfortunate Events: Tanya Hudson, Rita Ciccozzi, Dianne Holme, dancer Sharna Burgess, Julie McHaffie, Krista Seller Make-up artist for Cats the Musical, Jakey Hicks (center) with Jon Jon Briones and Isa Briones; hair stylist for Hamilton, Daryl Terry Burman was presented his Lifetime Achievement by special make-up ef- fects artist Vincent Van Dyke. Vin- cent's emotional and congratulatory speech brought the house to its feet in admiration for the man who has had not only a superlative and iconic career, but has trained and guided the careers of so many tremendously talented 706 make-up artists to follow in his foot- steps. At the beginning of his career, Tom worked alongside John Chambers on the original Planet of the Apes and for- ever changed the way movies were made and is himself coined the term "special make-up effects." Tom helped break the barriers for women make-up artists in the 1970s. He had his own studio and created some of the most memo- rable monsters (The Goonies, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Cat People, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Manitou) in film his- tory. His innate abilities with realistic injury and character make-ups brought the written words on Nip/Tuck, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and numerous other medical shows to life. Another highlight of the evening was the moving "In Memoriam," performed by singer Lisa Deveaux. A special John Singleton In Memoriam Award was pre - sented by longtime friends and associ- ates Craig Brewer, writer and director of Memphis with John Singleton, and Rob Smith, associate producer, Dolemite Is My Name. His daughter Justice Single- ton was on hand to accept the award, given with love from the Guild whose members worked closely with Singleton on numerous projects Presenters included John Brother- ton (Guardians of the Galaxy), Sharna Burgess (So You Think You Can Dance), Isa Briones (Star Trek: Picard), Jon Jon Briones (Sons of Anarchy), John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Jonathan Del Arco (Star Trek: Picard), Marcia Gay Harden (Code Black), Ian Harding (Pretty Little Liars), Melina Kanakaredes (CSI: NY), Kate Linder (The Young and the Restless), Dylan McDermott (Ameri - can Horror Story), Kel Mitchell (Dancing with the Stars) and Da'Vine Joy Ran- dolph (Dolemite Is My Name). This year, more than 650 entries from all over the world were submitted for the MUAHS Guild Awards. More than 900 glamorously dressed artists and industry people attended, laughed, cried and cheered on their rivals and colleagues.
