The audience uproariously came to its feet in ova- tion for this year's Distinguished Artisan, Sir Patrick Stewart. Presenting the statue to Sir Patrick were actor Brent Spiner, make-up artists Michael Westmore, James Mackinnon and RJ McCasland (in Romulan make-up, courtesy of Kato DeStefan). Stewart lovingly accepted the honor and reminisced his years of partnership with Local 706 artists. The genuine outpouring of love and admiration for the actor whose relationship with 706 has spanned more than a generation was genuine and endless. Guild members chose as this year's Lifetime Achieve - ment honorees, Thomas Burman for make-up and Mar- tin Samuel for hair styling. The audience was treated to wonderful videos capturing the amazing histories of these artists and their superior accomplishments and contributions to Local 706. Three times nominated for an Oscar, three times for an Emmy and a BAFTA winner, Martin Samuel began his career in England and achieved notoriety for his work with the world of rock 'n' roll, especially with Da - vid Bowie and for exquisite period hair styling. He de- signed and was the department head of all four Pirates of the Caribbean films, created all of Tracey Ullman's wacky characters in her Tracey Takes On… series and styled Ma- donna to perfection in Evita. He has shared his knowl- edge, teaching Local members his secrets and has hired hundreds of our hair stylists to work on projects that have taken them on locations all over the world. Always reaching higher and achieving a level of artistry that few others can match, Martin Samuel has truly deserved the Lifetime Achievement for his more than 40 years of contributions to his craft. Oscar-nominated director Mi- chael Apted, who has known Martin since the beginning of his career, presented the beautiful statue with heartfelt admiration for their longtime collaboration.
