THE ARTISAN SPRING 2020 • 45 recent movies, I realized that if the make-up could hold up on the 100 MP still camera I own, in most cases, it would be OK—as long as the make-up was lit in very harsh lighting. The biggest is - sue of concern was always the lace fronts of wigs. It is important to decide where to glue and where to let it sit on the skin by itself. I realized that the pattern of the lace does very strange things through digital cameras. They had already cast Damon Herriman as Charles Manson but did not yet have an actor for David Berkowitz. They wanted me to be involved in the process to decide who would be the best candidate for this role. Several photos and videos were sent to me. I felt a bit of pressure to be part of the casting process, but I did my best and gave honest opinions about the actors. Damon had a great face for the Manson role but the most important part, his eyes, were very different. And David Fincher wanted Damon to be a certain period of Manson when he had a lot of facial hair. So the eyes would be an even more important part of the design since 40 percent of his face would be covered by hair. I met Damon first and took a head cast, teeth cast, and scanned his arm to get a pattern for Manson's famous tattoos. Right after that, we got Oliver Cooper for David Berkowitz. We took his head cast and body measurements. For lab work, Vincent Van Dyke Ef - fects made molds and ran silicone pieces. They are my favorite people to work with since our collaboration on The Darkest Hour. Because of the filming schedule, I started to design Berkowitz first. Berkowitz had a very unique look. And he was stocky as well. We needed to change Oliver's body form to build the shoulder and chest wider. I hired Vanessa Lee to make a body suit. I gave Oliver a full wrap-around neck piece, a pair of cheeks, nose wings, upper lip, nose and forehead connected, chin and lower lip, and a pair of eyelid pieces. Diana Choi made a wig because when we took his head cast, he had a commitment with another show and we didn't know how long his hair would be during Mindhunter filming, but ultimately, we decided not to use the wig since we ended up able to use his own hair. Sasha Camacho made eyebrows and sideburns. I shaved his hairline to match Berkowitz's. This character was very tricky. I end up remaking whole appli - ances except for the neck piece. For actual filming, I asked Jamie Kelman and Thom Floutz to do the application on set. Depart- ment Head Make-up Gigi Williams was a great help. I was asking all kinds of questions about how the filming was going on set and how she had been working with David, since it had been a long time since I had been on set. She helped us to dress the hair on Oliver/Berkowitz. The application took little over four hours. We filmed for five days, including one whole rehearsal day with make-up on. We used Platsil Gel 10 and regular Baldiez skin, and Telesis 5 Sili - cone Adhesive. For hairpieces, we used Pros Aide paste and Super Baldies. Colors were mostly Skin Illustrator. For Manson's character, I sculpted a pair of cheeks, eyelids, nose tip, forehead/eyebrow covers. Diana Choi made a wig, beard and moustache. Eyebrows were made by Sasha Camacho. I got brown tinting cornea contact
