Considered by many to be one of the last remaining legends of Hollywood's Golden Age, Douglas' career spanned more than six decades, with performances in over 80 films, including Spartacus, Lust for Life, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Man from Snowy River and The Final Countdown. In addition to his SAG Award, he received an honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar, as well as three other Academy Award nominations, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and countless other accolades. Additionally, he is credited with helping to end the Hollywood blacklist, which aimed to prevent suspected Communist sympathizers from getting work in the entertainment industry. As one of the producers of Spartacus, he ensured that blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo received an on-screen credit. Douglas was greatly committed to philanthropic causes and donated millions for playgrounds, schools, hospitals and care facilities. Through the Motion Picture and Television Fund, he and his wife, Anne, created Harry's Haven, a residential home for those living with Alzheimer's and dementia, and donated over $40 million to its other initiatives, making the couple one of MPTF's largest donors in its history. In honor of his contributions, the MPTF announced construction of the Kirk Douglas Care Pavilion on the actor's 99th birthday in 2015.
