Gordon's career began with roles in radio and television as well as voiceover work for theatrical films. Throughout the 1950s, she became the first female performer to appear in network promos, televised political conventions and live commercials for shows like The Price is Right, effectively paving the way for women. Her commercial work continued with news and sports promos and commercials for Crisco and Duncan Hines. She maintained her dramatic career into the 21st century, appearing as a judge on episodes of Law & Order. Gordon was active for decades on behalf of her fellow actors. In 1959, Gordon was part of the first dozen branch members to serve on the SAG National Board — the sole woman in that group of 12. In 1966, she was elected president of the New York Branch, a first for a woman in any SAG branch. She was instrumental in improving the union's commercials contracts. Gordon served as trustee of the SAG-AFTRA Motion Picture Players Welfare Fund, The Actors Fund and the SAG-Producers Pension & Health Plans. She was also one of the creators of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Scholarship in honor of Jack Dales, which provides crucial financial support to members and their children pursuing an education.
