Bean was a multitalented performer, who worked as a comedian, magician and actor. He was best known for his roles in Being John Malkovich, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and appearing regularly on game and talk shows. A member since July 1951, Bean was married to actor Alley Mills and was the father-in-law of Andrew Breitbart. In December 1955, Bean won an AFTRA New York Local Board seat on a middle-of-the-road/anti-blacklisting slate. In January 1956, he was elected the first vice president of the Los Angeles Local, then elected to a second term on the New York Local Board in Dec. 1956. Bean was briefly blacklisted as a suspected Communist, and resigned from the board due to continued professional harassment. Bean loved performing in live theater, and much of his other work was done so he could pursue that passion. "You do theater out of love. You can always make a living doing the other stuff," he said.
