David Simon told Production Designer Richard Hoover that the logo should re ect the famous uote attributed to inclair ewis "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the ag and carrying a cross." The America irst logo would adorn multiple 23-foot tall banners along with the 13-state and 8-state .. ags, an adaptation of the real America fi rst shield, and the centerpiece, a full-length painted portrait of George Washington. I was lucky to fi nd what appeared to be the same image of Washington used in 1939 on Alamy. Their fi le was of a sie and resolution perfect for print use, however, I needed a fi fteen hundred percent enlargement. Although it was good uality, the image was an early 20th century rotogravure print, a close-up view revealed a tremendous amount of texture. This texture would look awful when enlarged and would have to be eliminated. After cleaning up the image, the noise was eliminated by fi ltering the image in Exposure's nap Art. This application lets users convert photos into natural media artwork with great control over the results. nce processed, the software renders a new version and the original's texture is eliminated. This techniue was also used to prepare twenty-one oil portraits of presidents and fi rst ladies for the White ouse state dinner and the fi rst lady's offi ce suite, and an additional group of landscapes for the .. Department of the Interior. This nap Art conversion process does an equally good a job eliminating the dot tones from four-color press sources. The fi nal element of the rally set is an American bald eagle symbol sitting atop the Washington banner. It's a vector art composite and re-draw from itock sources, which was printed at eight-feet-wide, mounted on gatorboard and contour cut. A paint-over by the cenic Artists gave it an authentic look. Designing the Neighborhood The fi rst three episodes have many scenes set on the commercial streets of Weeuahic and downtown ewark. The time given to deal with the many storefront designs needed was curtailed by the highly changeable schedule and delays settling A. AMERICA FIRST RALLY, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN BANNER ELEVATION.
