passenger areas of the ship, I made the crew areas technologically disappointing and very dated, going to the extent of using 1980s computer screens running simple 1990s graphics. The Bridge I wanted the bridge of Avenue 5 to be the showpiece of the whole ship, somewhere passengers can go, perhaps by invitation only, to see Captain Ryan and his handsome crew of pilots, navigators and technicians at work. I had the bridge set in mind when designing the exterior of the ship, creating a very pointed bow which in return would form a wide panoramic window at the front of the set wrapping around three sides. I knew the views from the bridge would be key at certain times to get "real" views of events that would help the narrative. I worked with the graphic team to design in-camera screens for the bridge. My aim was to create a ribbon of golden animated data running continuously across the consoles in front of the bridge crew. To achieve this, the consoles were designed around the only edgeless monitors that were available, using iPads and iPhones grouped together to create the curved sections joining the straights. I designed a captain's controls based more on the handlebars of a motorbike than a screen, to give the illusion that passengers are in safe hands when his hands are on the controls. To make it extra spacey I asked the special effects department to make the hand controls rise from the console on cue. I'm delighted this prop features so heavily in a couple of the episodes. I am so proud of the huge team and their achievements on Avenue 5. Here are some words from them… A. ENGINEERING AREA. ILLUSTRATION BY JORT VAN WELBERGEN. B. ENGINEERING AREA. SET PHOTO C.
