A V E N U E 5 | P E R S P E C T I V E 6 1 Avenue 5 is a futuristic comedy drama series for HBO created by Armando Iannucci (Veep, Death of Stalin and e ersona stor o a Coerfie). It follows an eight-week space cruise from Earth around Saturn and back again onboard the very glamorous Avenue 5 spaceship. Set forty years in the future, it stars Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Suzy Nakamura, Rebecca Front, Zach Woods, Lenora Crichlow and Nikki Amuka-Bird. Even though the series is set on a luxury space cruise liner, I suggested to Armando that the ship could have originally been a grungy, industrial fuel/ liquid/oxygen transporter vessel that has been converted by the Judd Corporation into a cruise ship by bolting a sleek white modernist hotel onto the front. The passenger area would be beautiful, made with marble, gold and huge white curving walls. I created some rough 3D visuals of the ship to present toArmandoillustrating the contrasting worlds. I loved the idea that a crew member could slide open a hidden door within the sleek, clean passenger area and enter the noisy, smelly, grungy rear part of the ship. They'd then wipe their feet and check their hair before rejoining thepassengers. I didn't want to create funny scenery, I wanted to allow Armando's comedy to come from the situation and the characters. I felt the sci-fi backdrop had to bebelievable and the props needed to be hung on real technology and accurate C A. AVENUE 5 ATRIUM, ILLUSTRATION BY JORT VAN WELBERGEN.
