A publication that will be of great interest to readers of PERSPECTIVE is Scenografi a & Costume, a periodical produced in Rome by the Italian Association of Production, Costume and Interior Designers (ASC). The magazine, with text in both Italian and English, covers Production Design and costume design for fi lm, television, theater and opera. Published three times a year, each issue is a large format, beautifully printed edition with stories and illustrations featuring many of the fi nest artists working in the industry today. Beginning with the December 2019 issue, Scenografi a & Costume has also moved to an online format, so readers can subcribe to the digital or printed edition, or both. As they move to the online platform, their emphasis is expanding beyond a primarily Italian focus to production in Europe and worldwide, as evidenced by recent articles on Inbal Weinberg's work on Suspiria and articles on the design of Black Panther, featuring work by both Production Designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth Carter. INBAL WEINBERG WEINBERG D ario Argento's Suspiria? «We left it behind and looked at German films and documentaries from the 1970s, at surrealist and contemporary illustrations, modernistic art and architecture», says Inbal Weinberg, the Israeli production designer, who has relocated to the United States years ago, and to whom we owe important films like Blue Valentine and Three Posters in Ebbing, Missouri. She is the one that Luca Guadagnino turned to for re-enacting the 1977 Berlin in which he set the homage to the Italian master's horror («a cover rather than a remake», according to Tilda Swinton who plays Madame Blanc, Dr. Klemperer and Helena Markos in the film). «The script suggested the design of the film as deeply rooted in the German history of that period - explains Weinberg - In the sets, we remained as faithful as possible to the historical details: a team from Berlin was sending us period-appropriate set-dressings and props. For the more fantastical elements, however, Luca relied on other sources, such as art, photography, performance art, sculpture and dance. Turning all those conceptual inspirations into something concrete was the real challenge».
