STORAGE SOLUTIONS MAR/APR 2020 STORAGE DEMAND IN POST PRODUCTION Post production storage demand is increasing with more multi-camera 360-degree projects, higher resolu- tions, more bits per frame and higher frame rates. This drives overall storage requirements as shown in "Figure 3". Companies providing storage systems for local storage for M&E applications include G-Tech (WDC), LaCie (Seagate), OWC, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba. Companies providing storage systems and software for network storage (besides those mentioned above) include AIC, Asustor, Avid, CineRAID, DDP, Facilis, Magstor, Open Drives, Pixit Media, Promise, QNAP, Rocstor, Stardom and TrueNAS. Figure 3: Post production storage capacity annual demand There continues to be demand for low latency local storage, particularly in smaller facilities, with increased demand for network storage and strong growth in cloud storage enabling remote video collaboration projects and cloud-based editing. The cloud storage will be in a combination of private clouds and public cloud infrastructure. The industry is gradually getting more comfortable with cloud storage. STORAGE FOR ARCHIVING Long term storage of video content requires inexpen- sive content storage. However, today archived content is accessed more readily than older passive archives, often offline in cold storage facilities. For this reason, many archives are now "active archives" that provide lower latency archived content access. The ultimate storage for these active archives will be on magnetic tape (mostly LTO), optical discs and hard disk drives. Although there is still a considerable amount of older video content that has not been digitized, much of the content that will be digitized has been or will be in the next few years. For this reason, future archive growth will be driven by archiving of new video con- tent as shown in "Figure 4" (See next page).
