LMGI COMPASS

Spring 2020
With the new season, hope springs
eternal. We move into a future
marked by political strife, climate
change and the coronavirus, all
making us more acutely aware
of our global interconnectivity.
We encourage our team, adjust
budgets, juggle schedules, fi nd new locations and move forward with open minds
and positive attitudes. We hope the LMGI is becoming a mainstay in publicizing
our issues, promoting the importance of our craft and giving our members tools
to help expand their professional horizons. We are working hard to be an integral
part of the bigger industry picture, and welcome your help in promoting our craft.
O Canada! We didn't really plan it, but the stars properly aligned in the northern
sky, and this issue heavily slants toward Canada. Nancy Mill's "Up Schitt's Creek"
cover story follows Toronto LM Geoffrey Smither blithely forging through six years
of "Schitt" on the popular TV series. Michele St-Arnaud provides this issue's
compelling "Career Focus" from Montreal. The up-and-coming Mo Qazzaz shares
his brilliant work in Alberta in our "Next Generation," and a fabulous pictorial of
Yellowknife seals the deal!
We interrupted our Canadian lovefest, dropping south to San Francisco, where
Shaun O'Banion caught up with the inimitable Daniel Lee, location manager, on
the picturesque and dreamlike The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Member Phill
Kane has some tried-and-true tips for all of us who have crashed and burned on
our new year's fi tness resolutions. Heading to the Southwest, Clay Peres escorts us
through Santa Fe "The City Different" and its environs. "In the News" remembers
Sarah Jones with a revised safety bulletin regarding train work. Member Kristin
Dewey puts her location managing skills to good use in her downtime, volunteering
with the Red Cross and her local animal shelter. Board member Les Fincher gives
us an update on a recent NY event and photographer/member Mark Indig has his
fi rst solo photography gallery exhibit.
Please mark your calendars for the LMGI Awards happening this fall. Hope to see
all of you on the red carpet!
Always a pleasure, never too busy.
Ken Haber, Lori Balton, Stevie Nelson and Paul Messana

EDITORS' DESK
"You may have a fresh
start any moment you
choose, for this thing
that we call 'failure' is
not the falling down, but
the staying down."
