www.postmagazine.com 2 POST JAN/FEB 2020 EDITOR'S NOTE his issue went to press in the heart of 'awards season' – just after the BAFTAs in London and right before the Academy Awards in Hollywood. I invite you to visit our Website for coverage of a wide range of feature film-related content, including my recent interviews with Joker editor Jeff Groth, and Guillaume Rocheron, who served as overall visual effects supervisor on the Sam Mendes film 1917. Both films received tons of attention this awards season. 1917 took a unique approach to storytelling, as we detailed in our last issue with Linda Romanello's conversation with cinematographer Roger Deakins. The film is presented as a single, uninterrupted camera move that is always moving forward, helping to advance the story of the World War I troopers who've embarked on a near-impossible mission. Much of the film's visual effects are invisible, and that's a credit to Rocheron and the team at MPC, which provided VFX solutions that affected more than 90 percent of the film. 1917 took home the BAFTA for its Special Visual Effects — as did Deakins for Cinematography — so visit postmagazine.com if you'd like to know more about the film and many of this year's other nominees. Post contributor Iain Blair has an exclusive interview with Kate Woods regarding her work on the Netflix series Messiah. The show is a thriller that explores the power of influence and belief in the social media age, following a CIA officer who uncovers information about a man who's gain- ing international attention. Woods co-directed the series with James McTeigue, and took time to speak with Post about what drew her to this project, its production challenges and its visual effects needs, among other things. In addition, visit the Post Website to gain insight into a number of films that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in late January. And in our "Careers" profile, Unit Studios' Nick Dalby talks about his work as a colorist at the London studio. It's all at postmagazzine.com. e have a lot to look forward to as the post market heads into a new decade. Online and in our final issue of 2019, we heard from many industry professionals who weighed in on various topics from VR, AR and remote collaboration to the cloud, AI, 4K, HDR, storage solu- tions and much more. These were all trends we saw emerging in the past few years that have come to fruition and things Post will continue to watch as we start off 2020…and beyond. Inside this issue of Post, we feature our annual "Posting Unscripted Television" coverage, beginning on page 16, where we spotlight two adventure series, Expedition with Steve Backshall (featuring our conversation with post producer Miles Hall), and Biggest & Baddest (where we speak with writer/producer/director Peter von Puttkamer) about what it takes to deliver com- pelling content from out in the wild to viewers at home. Post's Marc Loftus had a chance to speak with superstar editor Maryann Brandon, who co-edited Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker for director JJ Abrams and Lucasfilm (beginning on page 22); Iain Blair speaks with The Aeronauts director Tom Harper (page 14) and we help give the hit Fox series Empire a proper sendoff in our Primetime column, speaking with colorist Scott Klein of Light Iron about the show's final season. On a personal note, I'd like to say that after almost six years at the helm of Post magazine, I'm signing off with this issue. It was a great run, a real pleasure having the chance to work with so many of you in the industry over the past several years. Thanks so much for all your support of Post. It was a wonderful opportunity that I feel honored to have had and I want to thank the team and management for allowing me to have been a part of keeping the Post tradition alive. The post community is amazing, with so many great projects and talent. I may be moving on to my next great adventure, remaining within the industry, but I'll always be keeping one eye on the post market!
