6 • LMGI COMPASS | Winter 2020 L E T T E R FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members, As the solstice draws near, I write not from the comfort of my home, sitting in front of a crackling fi replace, with snow gently falling outside, but on location in yet another hotel room in the heartland of America. This time of year causes us to refl ect on the year's accomplishments and challenges, and I sit here overlooking the vast prairie refl ecting on the Guild's work this year. More than any previous year, we raised our profi le even higher—actively promoting the essential creative role of location professionals. We are vital members of the design team determining which locations advance and enhance story and character development. Once the locations are chosen, LMGI members use their creativity and logistical expertise to make it all happen for production. We kicked off the year at Sundance. In March, members participated in the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey's "World Trade Center Film and TV Scout Showcase." We held a successful panel discussion at Stone Mountain, GA, in April, followed by another in October at Pinewood Studios. We participated in two Directors Guild of Canada events in Vancouver in May and Montreal in June. Our panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in July was once again well received by a standing room only crowd. In early December, Board members participated in panel discussions and interacted with international location pros at FOCUS in London. Each of these events brought our message to location professionals, producers, designers, fi lm commissioners, and business and civic leaders around the world. Members attended Fam Tours in North, South and Central America, Europe, and Asia this year. Each of these tours provided the unique opportunity to meet fellow location managers, fi lm commissioners and production service companies. In addition to experi- encing incredible locations, these tours included participation in seminars and panels where members spread the Guild's message to government offi cials, production profes- sionals, and students The highlight of the year was our sixth annual LMGI Awards Show held at the Broad Theater in Santa Monica. Our best attended show to date featured fantastic presenters and award recipients from around the world in a joyous celebration of our global tribe. The committee set a high bar which we hope to surpass at next year's show. Remember, you can submit your favorite television, commercial or feature productions by going to our website. The transition from business members to partners has been well received. We now have 120 business partners, each one integral to our success. We appreciate the support and are working to increase the benefi ts of partnership moving forward. Our 1K 2020 Membership Drive has increased our membership by more than 45 percent this year and our goal of 1,000 members by the end of 2020 is in sight. Thanks to everyone who joined or recruited new members. Let's continue to invite colleagues who exemplify excellence on location worldwide into the fold. Their energy and ideas are critical to our collective growth. No matter where we live, none of us are an island. Ours is a collaborative industry and we can only benefi t from the shared knowledge and fellowship of being a part of the global tribe that is the LMGI. I'm proud of the strides the LMGI made in 2019. There is an enthusiasm growing among location professionals around the world as the word of our mission spreads. Consider getting involved in a Guild activity this year—you won't regret it! Until next issue, when we'll look ahead to 2020, I hope you have a safe and prosperous new year.
