78 The Costume Designer Winter 2020 end, "When Kayla owns who she is and makes the choice to walk away from that game, she returns to herself. She has come full circle and we see that in her clothing." To portray Roger Ailes (John Lithgow), Atwood built pieces on top of a padded body suit, which sounds physically challeng- ing for any performer, but the veteran actor handled the situation with aplomb. "John is one of the most considerate actors in the world," Atwood says. "He'd be in makeup for three hours. You'd forget he was there because everyone was in a swirl about the girls, then suddenly Roger would walk out." Getting his character right was about observing the particulars. "A lot of times with people that are larger, their clothes are either too big or too tight. In Roger's case, all the research I had showed that his suits were pretty loose." The minutiae is a passion for Atwood, and Ailes would be no exception. "I like little details like that he wore his tie clips almost at his waist. That's what made it him." Watching it all come together was particularly satisfying on a project that is so timely. The divisive nature of the subject mat- ter stood in sharp contrast to the teamwork and unified vision of the production. "I think that because Jay is such a hardworking director and very focused on who everybody is in the room, it was interesting for me. In the scope of the project, he noticed all the crowd, even commenting on them. He's a gracious human being and he and Charles Randolph were great together and col- laborated with everyone in a really positive way." The results are explosive. With Bombshell, Atwood enchants us in a different way and applies her inge- nious design mind with tremendous results.
