www.postmagazine.com 2 POST SEPT/OCT 2019 EDITOR'S NOTE n this issue, Iain Blair speaks with Maleficent: Mistress of Evil director Joachim Rønning, who recently wrapped up work on the new film, which hopes to extend the success of the 2014 release. On the Post Website, Emmy-winning composer Geoff Zanelli lends insight into his work on the Mistress of Evil score. Zanelli also worked with Bebe Rexha on the film's theme song, "You Can't Stop the Girl." He took some time to discuss how he updated the sounds from the famous 'Sleeping Beauty' tale. Also online, Brad Graeber, CEO of Austin, TX-based Powerhouse, recounts the studio's work on the new animated Netflix series Seis Manos, of which he is a co-creator. The program has an authentic kung-fu focus while featuring Mexican heroes. Graeber worked with series co-creator Alvaro Rodriguez on the production, which came together over a two-year span. The concept was optioned by Viz Media and recently debuted on Netflix. On the Post Website, he reveals the series' visual development process and PC-based pipeline. Ameen Abdulla, founder of the streaming studio platform Soundwhale (https://soundwhale. com), offers insight into the ups and downs pros experience when participating in remote stu- dio sessions. Abdulla is both a musician and audio engineer, and his experiences led him to build Soundwhale, a platform that allows users to remotely collaborate on and review audio produc- tions as if they were all in the same studio space. He discusses both asynchronous and synchro- nous communication tools. And in our "Careers" profile, engineer and sound designer Alfredo Pasquel reflects on the work he's done over the past four years, including handling dubbing and sound design for broadcast commercials and working on big-budget film's like Disney's The Lion King — all while at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions. There's lots of daily news and additional content too, so head over to postmagazine.com. isney invited the media last month to its Animation Studio in Burbank, CA, for an early press day surrounding the release of its highly-anticipated Frozen 2 sequel. As probably anyone not living under a rock would know, Frozen, which hit theaters in 2013, is the highest grossing animated film of all time and has gone on to score two Academy Awards, a me- ga-hit song, subsequent animated shorts, merchandising up the wazoo and so, so much more! Needless to say (or maybe it does need to be said), I had to keep my inner child in check as I walked through the doors of the famous building where Mickey, Minnie, Dumbo, Simba, Ariel, Moana and, of course, Frozen princesses Elsa and Anna were created. But it was hard not to get excited…the halls were lined with storyboards and stills from the new film and housed beautiful statues of Elsa, Anna and snowman Olaf, while paintings and murals decorated the communal/ meeting area walls. The press had a chance to meet the films' creators, director/writer/chief creative officer Jennifer Lee, director Chris Buck and producer Peter Del Vecho, who gave us a nice back- ground, particularly about their trip to Finland, Norway and Iceland for inspiration, as well as why they felt the need to create a sequel and what viewers can expect. "We realized that we missed the characters and that there was more to tell," said Lee. "There were unanswered questions from the first film." After the press had a chance to see several clips, we met with animators, visual effects artists, environment artists and spent more time with the filmmakers (plus, Post's exclusive sit-down with the film's editor Jeff Draheim) to talk about the sequel in more detail. The experience was priceless and resulted in our cover story (page 18), the first of several articles on Frozen 2. This issue is an overview, but come back next issue as we go further into animation and VFX advancements for the film. Enjoy the read, because soon enough, there's going to be a (snow)storm at the box office this upcoming holiday season!
