16 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2019 TALENT + ENERGY + HEART = LOCATION LEADERSHIP Once again, the LMGI partnered with industry partners, the Directors Guild of Canada BC District Council, Creative BC and the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of British Columbia to host an industry stewardship event on July 1 at the Marriott Parq in downtown Vancouver. The 'Leadership on Location' event began with a Friday Fam Tour of some of British Columbia's incredible locations, leading into Saturday's programming which included a series of entertaining Petcha Kucha presentations throughout the morning from local and visiting location managers (PK, Japanese for chit-chat, is a storytelling format where presenters show 20 slides with 20 seconds of commentary) and several engaging and informative panels of location professionals and film office liaisons discussing topics like the art of location management, and the relationship between location pros and film offices. Attendees then listened to a panel of incredibly strong and talented women filmmakers and enjoyed a closing rooftop reception. Panelists for the day included LMGI members Robbie Boake, Rino Pace, Georgette Turner, John Rakich, Ann Goobie, Onya Furey, Stevie Nelson, Adrian Knight, Jina Johnson, Dan Kuzmenko, and LMGI President Mike Fantasia. Thanks to LMGI members Matt Palmer, Hans Dayal and Jina Johnson, Kendrie Upton and Andrea Moore from DGC BC, Leslie Wooten from MPPIA and Marnie Orr from Creative BC, along with all the sponsors, vendors and volunteers for the hard work in putting together a great weekend. This event reminds us that no matter the geographical distance, it's the similarities in our skill and passion in what we do that bring us together, drawing from a deep pool of talent, energy and heart to chart the course of location leadership. The Norwegian Hospitality Association (NHO Reiseliv) created the award to honor those that build positive energy around Norway. A location manager, as well as a line producer for the Norwegian office of LMGI business partner Truenorth, Borch finds it rewarding that tangential business see the value of filming."People still go to Finse because of Star Wars, and Italy still attracts film tourists who want to see the locations from The Godfather. Film is better than advertising, it feels real and it lives forever," says Borch. Borch has worked on many high-profile films in Norway, including the upcoming Bond 25, filmed in Nittedal in Akershus; Mission: Impossible - Fallout, shot at Preikestolen in Rogaland; Transformers: The Last Knight, filmed on Trolltunga in Hordaland; Downsizing, shot in the Trollfjord in Vesterålen in Nordland; Ex Machina, filmed at Juvet Landskapshotell in Valldal on Sunnmøre; and Harry Potter and the Half- Blood Prince, filmed at the Raumabanen in Møre og Romsdal. LMGI business partner Sigmund Elias Holm, Film Commissioner of Western Norway, couldn't be happier: "Since the introduction of the film incentive in 2016, Per-Henry has pushed Norway's production profile to a new level. He brings major productions to all corners of the country, closing down entire mountains and fjords when required, proving that Photo by Hege Kolkinn L to R: Andrea Moore/DGC BC, Stevie Nelson, Mike Fantasia, Victoria Harding/DGC Ontario, Matt Palmer, John Rakich, Georgette Turner and Robbie Boake.
