22 wholelifetimes.com Chocolate Blackout Cake. A house-made arancello was the perfect after-dinner drink. For breakfast, try the scone of the day or indulge in a gluten-free peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. The Avocado Smash offers a strong morning start for vegans, with five-grain sourdough toast, ripe avocado, extra virgin organic olive oil, sea salt, and salad; Hippie Pancakes — whole grain with blueberries and real maple syrup — are another terrific choice. The motel's location is just off Highway 50 — aptly and blissfully dubbed the "loneliest road." Whether you're driving between locations or making separate stays, Mammoth Lakes, Calif., provides its own pine-filled, mountain paradise closer to home. The natural wonders to see here are varied: Devils Postpile National Monument is one. A short hike leads visitors to the unusual basalt rock formation that rises like a monolith near the base of the Sierra Nevada range. Wildflowers bloom well into the summer, and gentle 2.5-mile hike leads from the ranger's station to the bucolic Rainbow Falls. A shuttle bus system leads visitors to the monument, preventing vehicle overcrowding. Just south of Mammoth Lake, an astonishingly vivid pool of steaming blue water is yours to observe, but too hot to wade in. A short trail leads visitors to viewpoints of beautiful geysers, bubbling pools, and churning scalding hot water coming from deep within the earth. The steam along the creek's drainage is from water heated and pressurized before it reaches the surface, a process that may take around 1,000 years. Not far away, there are spots in which to bask and soothe bodily aches. Wild Willy's Hot Springs offers parking and an easy-to-follow wooden boardwalk to the series of three pools. There is no admission charge. Mammoth Lakes isn't just home to the beauty of nature, however, it's also the place to start the summer for film lovers. Now in its 5th year, the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival offers features, documentaries, and shorts both international and local in origin, in a five-day, well-curated event that includes talks, and is dedicated to emerging and innovative filmmakers. Year 'round, the Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theater offers high-quality, professional theater productions. While lodging choices abound, we like the cozy, wood-paneled Sierra Nevada Resort located in the heart of town. Suites with fireplaces and kitchenettes are large and well-appointed; rooms offer comfortable beds and recently revamped bathrooms. The hotel also has an unusual, fun perk: its own Frosty's miniature golf course, just beyond the hot tub. For breakfast or lunch, Stellar Brew and Natural Café can't be beat: natural ingredients, a focus on herbivores, and the ability to make foods gluten- and dairy- free are all a part of a menu that includes smoothies, juices, terrific coffees, sandwiches, and breakfast items. With the warmer summer months upon us, take time to stay cool. A great outdoor adventure to one of these destinations may be just the ticket!
