PHIL MCCARTEN / IGLA / SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS 25th A N N UAL SAG AWARDS The Silver Anniversar y's Golden Year T his year's annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was not only a celebration of the industry's most outstanding performances and talent, but of 25 years of the ceremony's most memorable moments. 25th A N N UAL From left, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett and Andy Serkis celebrate their Black Panther win. Hosted by Megan Mullally, the night's recipients included some first-timers, such as Rami Malek, Jason Bateman and the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, along with favorites Glenn Close, Sandra Oh and Mahershala Ali. One of the evening's highlights was the historic win by the cast of Black Panther for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. It was the year's highest-grossing film and the first superhero film to achieve this recognition. Chadwick Boseman gave comments on behalf of the cast. "We know what it is like to be told that there is not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on," he said. "We know what it is like to be a tail and not the head. We know what it is like to be beneath and not above. And that is what we went to work with every day, because we knew — not that we would be around during an award's season and that it would make a billion dollars — but we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world." In her remarks, SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris offered a reminder that the wonderful films being showcased were made possible through members' hard work — and union solidarity. "Though we are here to celebrate our art, we are also here to recognize the dignity and power of work," said Carteris. "Whether it's the latest film, commercial, TV show, hit single or news report, performers, like all workers, deserve fair wages, health care and pension. So, in honor of the working women and men across this nation and around the world, this is our moment." 48 SAG-AFTRA | Spring 2019 | sagaftra.org Click here for more photos
