MAR/APR 2018 ata storage is a key element in the digital transformation of content creation, post production, distribution, reception and archiving. Data capacity and communication speed increases, changing form factors, lowered product prices and the growing familiarity with digital editing, digital in- termediates and various forms of digital distribution are key components in the continued growth and development of entertainment. Because of the large file sizes required for high resolution and multi-camera images there is increas- ing demand for high capacity storage devices as well as high performance storage. The entire content value chain of content creation, editing, archiving, distribution as well as consumer electronics content reception devices, provide an accelerating feed-for- ward mechanism. This drives growth in data storage for all entertainment content applications. For many archiving and distribution applications where content is relatively static, low cost/high capacity SATA HDD storage, optical discs and tape- based storage libraries will predominate, with some flash memory used for caching, buffers and meta- data. Hard disk drives as well as enterprise SSDs are also used in high-performance storage applications where storage cost factors must be balanced with performance requirements. For applications requir- ing rugged field use or fast playback response, flash memory either as cards or solid state drives (SSDs) are now standard fare. Let's look at the state of stor- age technologies used in M&E and see how video professionals are using this storage. In 2018 Coughlin Associates conducted its ninth year of surveys by Media and Entertainment professionals on their use of digital storage in their media workflows. Results from that Survey, as well as the Coughlin Associates report on Media and Entertainment Storage, will be used as illustrations in this article. SOLID-STATE STORAGE FOR MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT Because of its performance and ruggedness, flash memory is now the predominant storage media for content capture (in particular in modern digital vid- eo cameras) as shown in Figure 1.
