www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAR/APR 2019 EDITOR'S NOTE arvel Studios' Captain Marvel is 2019's top box office film to date, introducing audiences to the brand's first lead female superhero. Our coverage of the film continues online with Linda Romanello's extended interview with visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend, who details the challenges of creating the film's signature effects. We also feature online coverage from some of the film's contributing VFX houses, including Trixter and Rising Sun Pictures. Our online film coverage continues with Iain Blair's interview with director Jon Baird, who recently completed work on the Sony Pictures Classics film Stan & Ollie about famed comedic partners Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Surprisingly, the film is not a comedy, but instead looks at the pair's complicated friendship, which dates back to the 1920s. Baird talks about the challeng- es of production and post, including the fine line he walked in balancing comedy with drama and emotion. Turning toward the small screen, we extend this month's "VFX for TV" coverage with details on several additional shows. You can visit postmagazine.com to read about the visual effects work featured in The Orville, NCIS: Los Angeles and more. On the sound side of the post business, I recently had a chance to speak with James Parnell at Monkeyland Audio in Burbank, who served as the supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer for Hulu's new streaming series Pen15. The show is an adult comedy that looks at life in the 7 th grade through the eyes of its writers and stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who are actually in their 30s. Parnell discusses the needs of the show and how he used sound design to aid in its storytelling. Post is heading to NAB in Las Vegas as this issue goes to print. Sesame Street, which is featured on this month's cover, was an answer to what co-founders Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett felt was a void in quality educational TV programming for kids. The show featured a multi-racial cast and pioneering puppeteer Jim Henson's now famous Muppets, who shared scenes and sang songs to help teach children their ABCs, 1-2-3s and overall proper behavior. The longest-running children's show on television, Sesame Street is now celebrating its milestone 50 th anniversary. A few weeks prior to publication, I had the pleasure of visiting the set in Queens, NY, while the cast and crew were in production on an episode for its upcoming 50 th season (which will begin airing this fall). Admittedly, I was beyond excited to make that set visit. This was probably one of my favorite stories I've worked on to date. While I was there, I had a chance to see a scene shot in front of the iconic Hooper's store. I walked through Abby's flower garden and posed for a photo with the famous fairy, touched Big Bird's nest and sat for a few photos on those well-known front steps of Elmo's apartment build- ing. It tapped right into some of my favorite childhood memories. You can read more about the show's post workflow on page 26 and what has changed on Sesame Street over the years — its address moved from PBS to HBO and it evolved from a tape-based workflow to digital. Currently, it's being shot on UHD, edited on Adobe Premiere Pro, color graded in Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve, with animation, VFX and CG sequences created in Maya, Houdini and After Effects. However, as the recipient of numerous awards, including multiple Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming, what hasn't changed is the high-quality content it provides children.
