12 ADVOCATE | SPRING 2019 Association Governance 2019 AEA Board of Director Candidates AEA President Joe Thomas I have proudly served as your president for the past three years. I ran for office on the idea of strong locals building a stronger state association. As an officer team we allocated AEA's resources with the belief that strong leaders are key to creating those strong locals. The #RedForEd movement perfectly illustrated how those ideas play out. Individual leaders wore red shirts and organized walk-ins and stand-outs at their school sites. Local associations held one of the largest, statewide union votes in history and decided to take a principled, powerful stand for our students. We marched. We stood vigilant. And we won. We returned to our students and schools with more resources—and with more respect. Parents and community leaders walked alongside us, reminding us they had our back, and Arizona saw AEA as a power to be reckoned with. Strong leaders. Strong locals. Strong AEA. We are not done fighting for the schools we deserve to work in. I ask for your vote so that I can continue building a more powerful union. A union of leaders who will courageously advance that fight. I cannot wait to see what we achieve next. In Solidarity, Joe Address: 1151 E. I have proven that with my background in organizing and community empowerment that I am qualified to continue to be part of a dynamic AEA officer team. As a mother of a seventh grader in the Roosevelt School District, my son is excelling because of the committed educators at his neighborhood school. It is for him and the educators that serve him, I am running for re-election. As a leader in my district, in my local, and on a state and national level, I am proud to bring the voices of Arizona education professionals to the public, in both elected and appointed positions. The #RedForEd movement has been a long time coming, educators have finally found their POWER and the sense of urgency to resist the long-standing neglect of our public schools. The movement was born out of solidarity and determination of educators grounded in their "WHY"… Our students, Our schools and Our communities. The time is now to commit ourselves to organize, energize, and lead Arizona to a place our students and families can be proud of. In solidarity, I humbly once again ask for your vote. I have been a dedicated member of AEA since I began teaching in Arizona. I bring to this position the knowledge I have gained as a PreK-12+ educator with 21 years of classroom experience (18 in AZ) at the preschool, elementary, junior high, high school, alternative school, and the post-secondary level. My previous role as a local association president representing both certified and classified employees in my district, would give me the perspective to equally represent our largest membership categories in our organization. I also served on the AEA Board of Directors for seven years serving the East Valley and presently am the lead treasurer for all state associations. But most importantly, I have the experience of serving the last three years as AEA's treasurer and have eight years of experience as treasurer in two other organizations. With our current AEA leadership, we have a budget in the black for the first time in over a decade and are building up vital programs to strengthen our union. I would like to continue this work with you and ask that you vote for Angela Philpot for AEA Treasurer. Address: 11151 E.
