52 The Costume Designer Winter 2019 COSTUME HOUSES Motion Picture Costume Company 3811 W. Valhalla Dr. Burbank, CA 91505 818-557-1247 motionpicturecostumeco.com After working on feature films themselves, Michele and Ron Archer began the business serving Costume Designers in 1982. Ron passed away in 2018, and Michele continues their passion for collecting rare, genuine pieces dating from the 1990s to as far back as the 1760s. The company is well known as the go-to place for very high- quality period military and police uniforms, with enough inventory to outfit a Revolutionary War army or a bomb squad. They also have a comparable inventory of period civilian clothing. As the company continues to grow their collection, they are currently expanding into a new warehouse. Universal Studios 100 Universal City Plaza Universal City, CA 91608 818-777-2722 universalstudioslot.com/costume The Universal Studios costume department has been around since 1915, and still includes pieces from the 1920s. Located on the fourth floor of the Edith Head building, the facility has fitting rooms, laun- dry and dyeing rooms, and a CDG library. Recently, they created a digital design workroom that can render designs using scans of fabrics or designs brought in by the designer on a digital mannequin that can be customized to the proportions of the actor. The program can identify stress points in the design and create stunt versions in another format, then generate sewing patterns for both. They have a men's tailor and a WCM (women's custom made) pattern maker and fitter. Additionally, they have a pleasant sitting room in front where customers can meet.
