T H E F R O N T R U N N E R | P E R S P E C T I V E 7 1 Before Stormy Daniels, Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones, there was Donna Rice, a woman who may or may not have spent a Friday night in 1987 with likely Democratic presidential front-runner Gary Hart. The next night, Hart was caught in the flashbulbs of a prying Miami Herald reporter, and within a week, was hounded out of the race in the news feeding frenzy that followed. My old friend and collaborator Jason Reitman wanted to tell that story. No, not the story of Donna Rice, or even really that of Gary Hart—he wanted to zoom in on the feeding frenzy. The script would be a series of stolen conversations with absolutely no Hollywood coating. So too the physical design should match that approach: embrace the ugly. In 2018, in the age of Access A.
