The Hollywood Reporter article did not rank the schools as is typical for a top ten list, but presented them in alphabetical order, along with information on the philosopy of the program, and the cost of tuition. Author Whitlock notes that previously the emphasis in the review of film programs is placed on areas like direction, producing and cinematography, and the motivation for this study was to give Production Designers and set decorators a deserved focus in the area of education. When asked if anything was particularly surprising to her as she did the study, she said, "I was amazed at the number of people who had not studied Production Design as a major. Like costume design, many entered through the back door of theater." As noted in the article, only AFI and Chapman offer a pure Production Design program. Most of the other schools have programs that have grown out of theater design programs, and many offer study in both areas. The outstanding programs named were: American Film Institute's AFI Conservatory- Los Angeles, CA Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama- Pittsburgh, PA Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts-Orange, CA La Femis-Paris New York University's Tisch School of the Arts- NYC Nottingham Trent University-London San Diego State University's School of Theatre, Television and Film-San Diego, CA Savannah College of Art and Design- Savannah, GA UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television- Los Angeles, CA University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Design & Production-Winston-Salem, NC A.
